Friends of the Global Fund Europe applauds the increase of Germany’s financial pledge to the Global Fund for 2020-2022
The fourth largest public donor to the Global Fund renews its determined willingness to fight against HIV, tuberculosis and malaria by pledging €1 billion for the upcoming three-year period
Biarritz, France, 25 August 2019 – The German Chancellor Angela Merkel made an early announcement today at the G7 summit in Biarritz, France, ahead of the 6th replenishment conference to be held in Lyon on October 10. Germany increases its pledge to the Global fund by 17,6% for the 2020-2022 period compared to its previous contribution of €850 million.
Friends of the Global Fund Europe applauds Germany’s decision, as a clear demonstration of a strong and long-term commitment to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and to the advancement of global health.
”It is the right thing to announce this substantial pledge ahead of the conference in Lyon”, states Former German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development and Vice-President of Friends of the Global Fund Europe, Heidemarie Wieczorek–Zeul. “Increasing the German contribution is sending a message that is hopefully encouraging to other donors. We as a global community will only succeed in ending the three epidemics if we plan and act jointly with others and to the best of our abilities.”
As a critical component of the international global health architecture, the Global Fund is a key player of the Global Action Plan for healthy lives and well-being for All, a strategy laid out by the World Health Organization (WHO) to achieve the health related Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). With the increase of its pledge, Germany renews its trusts in a multilateral instrument whose results show its ability to have an impact on the three diseases and a lever effect on domestic resources and health systems to achieve SDG3 by 2030.
Today’s efforts are tomorrow’s opportunities. With a successful sixth replenishment of at least US$14 billion this October in Lyon, the Global Fund will be enabled to continue to play its crucial role in the fight against HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.
